In 1620, about half the USA was covered by trees. Today the forests have almost gone. A lot of good land has gone with them, leaving only sand. China doesn’t want to copy the USA’s example. We’re planting more and more trees. We’ve built the “Great Green Wall” of trees across northern part of our country. The Great Green Wall is 7,000 kilometers long, and between 400 and 1,700 kilometers wide. It will stop the wind from blowing the earth away. It will stop the sand from moving towards the rich farmland in the south. More “Great Green Walls” are needed. (51)Trees must be grown all over the world. We drink tea every day. (52) But more than three hundred years ago, most people in Europe did not know anything about tea. Some people had heard about it, but very few of them knew what to do with it.

There’s a story about an English sailor who went to countries in the east, the west and the south. He had been to India and China. One day he came home and brought some tea as a present for his mother. She told her friends about the present and asked them to a “tea party”. When her friends came to the “tea party”, the old woman brought out some tea leaves (葉子) and asked them to eat. Of course, nobody liked the tea leaves.

At that time, the sailor came in. He looked at the table and said, “Mother, what have you done with the tea?”

“I boiled it as you said.”

“And what did you do with the water?”

“I threw it away, of course,” answered the old woman.

“Now, you may throw away the leaves, too.” said the sailor.

  Passage Three

  (53) People are often killed while crossing the road. Most of them are old people and children. Old people are often killed because they usually can’t see or hear very well. Children are often killed because they are careless.

A car, truck or bus can’t stop very quickly. If a car is going very fast, it will travel many meters before it stops. People don’t understand this. They think a car can stop within a few meters. The faster a car is traveling, the longer it needs to stop. (54) It is very hard for a person to know how fast a car is traveling.

The only safe way to cross the road is to look both ways, right and left. When the road is clear, it’s safe to cross. The correct way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It’s not safe to run. If people run across the roads, they may fall to the ground.

  11. Who are most likely to be killed when crossing the road?

  A. Young boys and girls.         B. Mothers and their children.

  C. Old people and children.      D. People who can’t stop quickly.

  A. To look both ways while crossing the road.

  B. To walk slowly while crossing the road.

  C. To know how fast a car can run.

  D. To wait until all the cars have stopped.

  15. Why is it not good for people to “run” across the road?

  A. Because cars travel faster than they do.

  B. Because drivers can’t judge how fast they run.

  C. Because they are likely to fall to the ground.

  D. Because they can’t stop before a car hits them.

  Passage Four

Animals perform many useful and entertaining jobs. Dogs are particularly valuable in guiding the blind (a trained dog can learn never to cross a busy road when cars are coming, even if his master commands him to do so), protecting property, finding lost people, and hunting criminals. Horses are used in guarding herds; carrying men in lands where there are no roads, and helping farmers work their land. Pigeons have long been used to carry message. Wild animals from the jungles, forests and seas are very popular performers in circuses and moving pictures. People realize that, although animals may not have the same intelligence as human beings, they are smart enough to learn certain things.

  (55) The first thing a dog is taught is to obey. It should not take too long for him to learn commands. Simple orders, such as “sit, lie down, stay there, come here,” can even be taught by a child.

Training a dog to be a watchdog often produces unexpected results. Some dogs quickly learn the difference between unwanted people and friends. This is because their masters welcome friends and invite them into their houses. However, some dogs will always attack the postman who comes to deliver letters. One explanation for this behavior is that, although the postman comes to the house often, he never enters the house. Therefore, the dog thinks the postman is someone who is not wanted, but keeps coming back anyway.

Masters of dogs who attack a postman can easily show the dog that the postman is a friend and that the dog does not need to treat him as an unwanted person. A dog is quite ready to do what his master wishes. And a dog is always happy when he is praised for understanding correctly.
